BonEs Slalom Challenge

Anton Viljoen hosted the BonEs Slalom Challenge, a 3 round ranking list slalom event on the 12-13 December at Bon Esperanza, Malmesbury. Of the original 20 entries 17 took to the water (2 got hurt before the event while the 3rd is mystery).

On Saturday morning the skiers were greeted with perfect conditions. Skiers took full advantage of the conditions, especially in the younger divisions where four personal bests (PBs) were set within the first five skiers. One of the highlights was watching Richard Levey round all 6 buoys on an 11.25m rope only to lose the handle going through the exit gates.

By the time the second round had begun a slight southerly wind had picked up, but conditions were still great. Some skiers used the head-tail wind to their advantage and more PBs were set. A decision to leave the third round until Sunday morning was taken in order to give the skiers the best opportunity to ski in excellent conditions, a decision that backfired.

Gale force winds swept through the Cape area on Sunday with wind speeds of over 60kph being recorded. Although the water conditions were still very skiable, the wind made skiing very difficult indeed. As a result the performances were well down on that of the previous day.

Not to end the event on a low, all skiers and officials were invited to the Wakami/Wafu restaurant in Green Point, where the organiser treated everyone to free cocktails on the deck. No doubt all that attended had an absolute blast.

Mini League Piket Burg

Piketberg lived up to it's reputation by delivering scorching heat over the weekend of 31 October. Ironically the wind was a welcome relief from the heat even though it whipped up the water making skiing conditions difficult. However, those skiers that got in early used the glassy conditions to their advantage and some awesome results were achieved.

On Saturday skiers took advantage of the first WP Ski School where experienced skiers were at hand to help. Most, if not all present, stayed on site for the evening festivities, while on Sunday morning the 2nd of the league events took place.

Thanks to the Viljoen family. Your hospitality is greatly appreciated.

Based on a handicap system, honours in the divisions were as follows:

  • Super League -Eamon vd Merwe

  • Qualifying League -Elizna Schutte

  • League -Carol Lockwood

  • Mini-League -Bronwyn de Lange
