Kakamas 2010 Report Back

As much as the truly spectacular and world-class site of Lake Grappa blew away the minds of the skiers and officials at the SA Waterski Championships which took place in the Northern Cape, so did the weather blow away chances of any personal best of SA records for the event, which was held from 24 – 26 April 2010 in very windy conditions.

Arriving at the site was akin to seeing Las Vegas for the first time. Travelling either from Cape Town via Springbok and Pofadder (8 hours) or east to Johannesburg along the N14 (9 hours),  one travels past vast tracts of land – shrub, vineyards, citrus and not much else – for hundreds of kilometers. Then, in a beautiful valley between the Augrabies Falls and Kakamas, you come across Visser family’s 680 x 70 metre private ski course on their 2,000 Ha. farm – which was dug with their own equipment and people in 14 months. Completed in 2008, the ski site now includes guest cottages, camping sites, a huge clubhouse and is now one of the finest in the world, and it is there that the 2012 European and African championships (Under 21) will take place.

With an entry of 46 skiers representing both South Africa and Namibia, hopes were high for many records to tumble. GJ Visser, who had just earned the top skier award at the All Africa championships in Namibia, was hoping to improve on his already impressive 4 buoys on 11.25 metres which he achieved at the 2009 EAME (Europe, Africa and Middle East – but the Middle East defected to the east so it is now EM). Gabriella Viljoen, fresh from taking second at the Moomba Championships in Australia, was hoping to improve on her astonishing half  buoy on 11.25 before she left for a string of competitions in the United States later in May, while Lizette Bekker (Senior Ladies 2) and Jan Johnson (Senior Ladies 3) were hoping to break SA records they had broken earlier this season in ramp and slalom respectively Read More Here

Tournament Waterskiing saw six sites host tournaments last season, with Satellite dam hosting their first very successful tournament at their beautiful site surrounded by wetlands and mountains near Albert Falls. The All Africa Games took place at the Von Bach Dam near Windhoek, Namibia, and was both welcoming and festive, with several records broken there.

This last season, four SA records were broken:
Gabi Viljoen broke her own Junior Girls records with .5 buoys on11.25m at Stillwater in Florida, USA – even a higher record than the Open Women Record. GJ Visser broke the long-standing Junior Boys Record with 4 bouys on 11.25m and taking the All Africa Champion title. Lizette Bekker broke the Senior Womens’ 2 Record with her 28m jump in KZN, while Jan Johnson won the EAME Senior Ladies 3 Slalom in Holland, and breaking the SA record three times this season at Maurik, Netherlands, Satellite and at the All Africa Games (5.25 on 14m).

“Our focus is on increasing active new skier participation, and to assist the juniors improve our standards for our future skiers to bring home the medals for South Africa”, said Anton Viljoen, who resumes his title of Chairman of the new committee.

Four key's for a successfull wake crossing

In this water ski how to, Jon Travers shares his four keys to successful wake crossings.

1. The better job I do of keeping my eyes and head up, the easier it is for me to maintain a strong upper body.Jon Traver

2. Keeping my shoulders level and slightly open gives me the strongest position leveraged against the boat.

3. My arms are an extension of the rope. By relaxing my arms, I keep the rope as long as possible, and it allows me to maintain a strong edge.

4. A forward flex in my ankles helps my knees remain properly bent in preparation for a controlled edge change

By Water Ski Mag

Will Asher's three key points for a perfect turn

In this water ski how to, World Champion slalom skier Will Asher shares his three keys to a perfect turn.

1. If I carry enough speed into the turn, I can release to maximum reach (fingertips) and complete my turn at the buoy before the line goes tight.

Will Asher2. A balanced position brings confidence. My number-one focus when balancing is my eyes. If my eyes are open and level, I’m free to move where I want.

3. Holding the handle in my fingertips comes from feel and practice. It’s a necessary tool when running shortline. I only use this move when I’m certain I have enough freedom from the boat.

By Water Ski Mag

How to maximize cross-course direction

All too often, skiers will integrate their edge change and reach into one movement. The outcome? Loss of direction, i.e., a narrow path into the buoy. These two actions should remain distinct and should occur at different points along the swing from one side of the course to the other. Your edge change should occur somewhere close to the wake’s centerline, while your reach begins much later, at a point halfway out to the buoy line. Establishing and maintaining a solid hip-to-elbow connection from the completion of the turn to the initiation of your reach will ensure you’re in a strong enough position to maintain your desired cross-course direction. — Terry Winter, More Here

Mofam Mini League

Sunday 11 April was a perfect autumn day at theMofam Ski School, Elgin.  There was not a breath of wind and we had beautiful sunny weather, perfect conditions for skiing.

The Western Province Mini-League competition got off to a start at 09h30 with Piet van der Merwe judging and Dewald Du Plessis driving the boat.  14 Skiers took to the water in near perfect conditions with a number of first time competitors.  Eamon van der Merwe made most of the day by achieving 1 on 11m (55km/h), an excellent performance in the Dolphin Boys division.  This is one buoy short of the long standing SA slalom record of Sean Bezuidenhout set more than 10 years ago in 1997 in this division.

The second round started at 12h00 with the addition of Tou-Tattie (Brett Harris) to the boat.  In the meantime the spectators enjoyed a number of Windhoek draughts and red wine with delicious light meals prepared by the Mofam staff.   The recent All Africa championship was discussed by most of the spectators as they thoroughly enjoyed the Namibian hospitality while attending this competition.  During the last skiers pass, Cameron Rein had to sit it out in the water as the boat crew chased a snake out of the course.  Once the course was cleared Cameron was able to complete his run, very attentive of the section where the snake left the course, making very sure that he did not fall there.

The day ended at 15h30 with certificates handed to all the competitors.  A big THANK YOU to Mofam and all there staff for making this competition a memorable one again. - Jasper Schutte

Based on a handicap system, honours in the divisions were as follows:

  • Super League - Robyn Viljoen

  • League - Peter Brinkley

  • Mini-League - Roche van der Merwe

All Africa Champs Manager's report

For most people Namibia is synonymous to sand, dunes, 4 x 4 and the Etosha.    Telling anyone that the All Africa Water ski championships for  2010 is hosted in Namibia has led to the same reaction :  “Really, where is the water?”  Little do they know that the Von Bach dam is one of the most beautiful dams in the Southern hemisphere. The Von Bach dam lies just outside Okahandja on the outskirts of the Auas mountains in a game park which covers 4 300 ha.  The dam has a capacity of 50 million cubic meters.  We were fortunate to see a few kudu at dusk coming to the water edge for their daily drink.
With the competition starting on Thursday 1 April (no there were no fools), most competitors and families arrived on Wednesday 31 March and settled themselves in their tents for a weekend filled with skiing, wakeboarding, great food and loads of fun.  Each of the competitors had the opportunity to test the water prior to the start of the Namibian Open championships.  The competition kicked off with tricking on Thursday afternoon.  At the break of dawn on Friday morning the first skiers were on the water for their first round of slalom.  Although it was not a great start for some of the youngsters, many of the older competitors had a good round of slalom.  One of the highlights of the day was when the wakeboarders took to the water and entertained the spectators with world class performances – real acrobats on water! Gabi get's iniviation to US Masters!

The field for the 51st Running of the Worlds most prestigious Waterski event, the US Masters has been announced and can be viewed on www.masterswaterski.com. The Masters is known throughout the world as the most prestigious watersports tournament. The event began in 1959 at Callaway Gardens and is held annually during the Memorial Day weekend.

The Robin Lake site at Callaway, built specifically for the Masters, boasts an expansive pavilion with covered stadium seating, judges' tower and media area. The action can be seen clearly from the beach and picnic areas. The immaculately maintained gardens, lakes, resort and attractions at Callaway provide a tournament venue like no other in the world.

An invitation to compete in the Masters is universally considered an honour and an acknowledgement of achievement for reaching the pinnacle in a given watersports discipline - only the world's most elite athletes compete at the Masters! This tournament is IWWF/USA Water Ski and WWA sanctioned.

The 18th Junior Masters Tournament features the world's finest junior waterskiing and wakeboarding athletes. A tournament where qualification for an invitation means that a skier has to either be in the top 5 on the IWSF Standings list, or the reigning World Champion in aan event, or the reigning World Overall Champion or the reigning US Masters Champion. The US Masters hosted by Correct Craft will again be run on Robin Lake at Callaway Gardens in Georgia from the 28-30 May and can also be viewed live on webcast TV. Gabi Viljoen will be making her second appearance at the US Masters and is hard at work training to win this event in her last tournament as a Junior, before switching to Open Woman on the US circuit in June. The competition will be tough but having been there before and having won an event such as the Moomba Masters in the past and again having placed second in 2010 Gabi is confident of beating the best in the world.”

AGM & Proposal & Selection of New Criterion Committee

The annual AGM is coming up at the SA Championships to be held at Lake Grappa near Augrabies Falls on the Orange river on the weekend of the 24-26 April.  The past year the Tournament Waterski Committee consisted of 4 members. According to the constitution of the SA Waterski Federation and the Tournament Criterion, a new committee needs to be selected consisting of no fewer than 3 members and no more than 10 members. I am of the opinion that to function effectively, that the Tournament Waterskiing Criterion Committee should consist of at least 5-6 members so as to take care of the various portfolios such as Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Technical, Marketing and Publicity, Skiers Representative,  National Teams.

Some of the current Committee will no longer be available for re-election and hence I call for nominations, form included, to be made for the 2010/2011 Tournament Criteria Committee.

According to the Current Constitution, the committee will be elected at the AGM class meeting by “ the Administrative ( i.e. judges, homolgators, calculators and similar officials etc ) and Competitive members of the Criterion, by ordinary majority, elect the members of that Criterion Committee.”

Further that “
8.2.5. No person shall be eligible for election to the Criterion
Committee at any class meeting of the Criterion, unless he:
8.2.5.1. is nominated by the Criterion Committee for election and
a written notice of acceptance for the nomination is received
from the nominee; or
8.2.5.2. notice in writing is given to the Criterion, not less than 7
(seven) days nor more than 14 (fourteen) days before the day
appointed for the class meeting, by a Member duly qualified
to be present and vote at the meeting for which such notice is
given, of the intention of such Member to nominate such
person for election as well as a written notice of acceptance
for the nomination signed by the nominee.
8.2.6. The members of each Criterion Committee shall have the power
to co-opt any one person as a member of such Criterion
Committee. The co-opted member’s term of office will expire when
the Committee’s term expires.

Kindly forward proposals including secondment and acceptance of the nomination to anton@tau.co.za  or fax 021 7944774 by no later than 17 April 2010

Wp Coaching and League - MAC

Rietvlei dam was all hustle and bustle this past weekend with a coaching clinic for slalom and trick ski on Saturday 6 March and a WP Mini league competition on Sunday.  While Saturday was a rather windy day with a scorching sun the coaches, Cameron, Simon,Matthew and Jaryd were very keen to coach  skiers on the finer techniques of slalom and trick skiing.  On Sunday we had a fantastic turnout of skiers (young and middle-aged) for the Mini league competition where everyone tested their skills in the newly installed slalom course. The weather was magnificent with just a little breeze to make the heat more bearable.  Quite a number of new skiers participated and we would like thank everyone and especially Milnerton Aquatic Club for circulating the newsletter about the event. Johann Landman was the driver of his Malibu XLI and he ensured the safety of all skiers and also contributed to make the skiing a great experience for all.  The boat crew, Cameron and Simon were the judges and tow tatties, counting the buoys and totaling the scores.  With all the action on the water, the spectators had a perfect view of the course from the side while Jasper was the commentator for the day.  We hope to see all the new novice skiers participating soon in national events and take WP waterskiing to the next level.

Based on a handicap system, honours in the divisions were as follows:

  • Super League - Robyn Viljoen

  • League - Lohann Vermeulen

  • Mini-League - Robert Brink

Bon Es Champs and Night Skiing

"Sun, camera, action" and "lights, camera, action" were the order of events at Bon Esperanza, the venue of the BonEs Championships by day and a slalom classic by night.

Organisers gave the skiers every opportunity to familiarise themselves with conditions by offering official practice the whole of Friday until late into the night. A persistent breeze and the lack of a warm sun saw the drivers having to don warm jackets. Skiers found the icy wind biting in to their skin, only finding refuge in the warmth of the water at either end of the lake. This did not look good for the nights ahead. More Info here
